An Apple a Day . . .

As designers we can easily become sedentary in our (mostly) computer-based profession and not even really notice it.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, nearly two-thirds of all occupational illnesses reported, were caused by exposure to repeated trauma to workers upper body ( the wrist, elbow or shoulder ). One common example of such an injury is carpal tunnel syndrome.

I, for one, did begin to notice I was working more and more and taking less and less breaks. “I just have to much to do” was my internal conversation.

Over time, I began to feel fatigued and less energized. My clothes also got mysteriously tighter.

So I decided to integrate some simple exercises and stretches (I ordered MacBreakZ – see below) into my daily routine and took a 20 minute walk for lunch.

In short order I was feeling much better, more energized and less stressed. I would also dare say my creativity also increased noticeably – which was a nice side effect.

So make it a point to take regular breaks in your creative work where you stretch, do some light strength work, take a walk down the hall or go outside and get some fresh air and sunlight.
